Hank Palmer, a brilliant but shady attorney, returns to his Indiana hometown after learning that his mother has passed away. His arrival triggers renewed tension between himself and his father, Judge Joseph Palmer, who makes no secret of his disapproval of Hank's morally ambiguous career. As the lawyer prepares to depart, his father is arrested for a hit-and-run death. Hank takes on his father's defense, despite the objections of the resentful old man.
♦ Vera Farmiga and Robert Downey, Jr. play characters who are supposed to be the same age, but she is eight years younger than him. Leighton Meester, who played Farmiga’s daughter, is just thirteen years younger than her, while Sarah Lancaster, who plays Downey’s wife, is fifteen years younger than him.
• Dammit, Hank. I loved you then and I love you now. I do. I love how you are simultaneously the most selfish and the most generous person I know. I love how you hate a bully while being one. But your constant second-guessing of others, that crystal-ball bullshit? That hyperverbal vocabulary-vomit thing that you do? I disappeared around you, Hank.
• Whatever had or hadn’t happened in the past, I was gonna be the hero of my own story.
